What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

The dictionary defines search engine optimization as “the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website from ‘free’, ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ search results, by ensuring the site appears high on the list of results by a search engine”. From the perspective of a business owner it is this but it is so much more. To us as business owners we are looking for qualified traffic to our sites not just any traffic. We are looking for visitors that are interested in our products or services. So in its purist terms SEO is about driving qualified traffic to your site.

Since a business’s website should be at the center of all marketing activities and initiatives, a well optimized site is crucial to your business success.

Search engine optimization should not be thought of as a one and done process. Your site should be reviewed and optimized on a regular basis to maintain the competitive advantage over your competition that a well executed SEO program can provide.

At Imagine we work with our clients to optimize their sites as part of the site redesign or build process as well as on an ongoing basis month to month.

What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?

Search Marketing is an important element of any inbound marketing program. At this very moment, there are consumers online searching for the products and services your business offers. Wouldn’t it be great if in their search, they find you?

That is what search marketing is all about. Getting found! And even better, getting found by consumers in need of and actively searching for your products and services. Getting found is the first step in the inbound sales process. You can’t get leads, develop them and convert them to clients if they don’t find you in the first place. The goal of search engine marketing is to boost visibility, of your website, your business, your brand, and to drive traffic to your business, and generate leads.

What is search marketing? Is it the same thing as search engine optimization? In practice no. Search engine optimization is just one part of the search marketing process.  So why is there the need for search marketing?  Why not just optimize my site like I have in the past?

As consumers have become more sophisticated in their shopping habits so have the search engines. Google in particular has redefined search. As Google continues to regularly update their search algorithms, the emphasis on what makes a successful search has changed. The emphasis is no longer just about optimizing a page rather it is now about things like:

  • Providing quality content
  • Subject matter expertise
  • Social media integration
  • Credibility and trustworthiness
